Sir Edward Michael Packenham (1778-1815) Irish soldier and politician, holograph four-page letter, 6 July 1813, signed as Adjutant General in the Peninsular War, to Dennis Pack (c.1772-1823) addressed to “My Dear Pack". War of 1812 casualty Edward Packenham, writing as Adjutant General to the Duke of Wellington, informs Major General Pack of an unwelcome appointment as temporary commander of the Highland brigade explaining the rationale behind Wellington's decision and making recommendations for the appointment of subordinate officers later in the month. 4pp. 4to. Packenham was killed leading the British forces at the battle of New Orleans on 8 January, 1815. His counterpart on the American side was Andrew Jackson, later 7th President of the United States. Packenham's sister, Kitty Packenham was married to The Duke of Wellington.
